Angles, Triangles and Polygons
For Singapore O-Level E-Math geometry, name the angle fact that justifies each step before calculating. Angles on a straight line sum to 180°, angles at a point sum to 360°, and vertically opposite angles are equal. With parallel lines, corresponding and alternate angles are equal, while the interior angles between the lines sum to 180°. Then combine the result with triangle or polygon properties. Keep circle theorems and similarity criteria in their dedicated guides.
What this guide covers
Angle types and basic angle facts, parallel-line relationships, triangle and parallelogram angle properties, and interior and exterior angle sums for convex polygons.

Worked example
Two parallel lines are crossed by a transversal. One acute angle is 68°. Find the adjacent obtuse angle on the same straight line.
The adjacent angles lie on a straight line, so they sum to 180°. The obtuse angle is 180° − 68° = 112°. State the straight-line reason; the parallel-line fact identifies the corresponding acute angle if the 68° angle is on the other intersection.
Use a parallelogram angle property
A parallelogram has one interior angle of 68°. Find its other three interior angles.
Opposite angles are equal, so the opposite angle is 68°. Adjacent angles in a parallelogram are supplementary, so each remaining angle is 180° − 68° = 112°. The four angles are 68°, 112°, 68° and 112°, summing to 360°.
Use the exterior angle sum
Find each exterior angle of a regular octagon.
The exterior angles of a convex polygon sum to 360°. A regular octagon has eight equal exterior angles, so each is 360° ÷ 8 = 45°. Its interior angle is 180° − 45° = 135°.
Try three practice checks
Attempt each on paper before revealing the worked answer. These sample particular skills; they do not diagnose the whole topic or establish mastery.
Check 1
Two angles in a triangle are 47° and 68°. Find the third angle.
Show worked answer
Triangle angles sum to 180°, so the third angle is 180° − 47° − 68° = 65°.
Check 2
A convex polygon has 9 sides. Find its interior angle sum.
Show worked answer
The interior angle sum is (9 − 2) × 180° = 1260°. This does not assume the polygon is regular.
Check 3
A regular pentagon has equal exterior angles. Find one exterior angle and one interior angle.
Show worked answer
One exterior angle is 360° ÷ 5 = 72°. The interior angle is 180° − 72° = 108°. Check that the interior and exterior angles at a vertex sum to 180°.
Mistakes to watch for
- Corresponding and alternate angles are equal when the two lines are parallel; state the parallel-line relationship used.
- Use 180° for a triangle angle sum and 360° for the sum of one exterior angle at each vertex of a convex polygon.
- In a multi-step solution, record a reason beside each new angle instead of relying on how the diagram looks.
If one of these occurs, compare the relevant step with the worked example, then try a different question before drawing conclusions.
