What this guide covers
Straight-line, parallel-line and triangle angle reasoning at Sec 1 level. Polygon and circle-theorem chains remain later work.
Start with the given relationship
Adjacent angles on a straight line total 180°. Corresponding and alternate angles are equal only when the lines are parallel.
- Mark the two parallel lines and the transversal before naming a corresponding angle.
- Triangle interior angles total 180°, regardless of how the triangle is drawn.
Use a straight line and parallel lines
Two parallel lines are cut by a transversal. An acute angle is 62°. Find its adjacent obtuse angle and the corresponding acute angle at the other intersection.
- The adjacent angle is 180°−62°=118° because the pair lies on a straight line.
- The corresponding acute angle is 62° because the lines are parallel.
- These are different positions: 118° is obtuse and 62° is acute.
Check: 62°+118°=180°. Corresponding angles match only when their positions match.
Complete a triangle reason
A triangle has two interior angles of 49° and 66°. Find the third.
- Interior angles in a triangle sum to 180°.
- Third angle =180°−49°−66°=65°.
Check: 49°+66°+65°=180°.
Keep reasons visible
A multi-step answer should show which fact produced each new angle, rather than a chain of numbers with no explanation.
Try it yourself
Work on paper, then compare the steps. These checks do not establish mastery.
Two adjacent angles on a straight line are x° and 137°. Find x.
x+137=180, so x=43°.
An alternate interior angle is 71° when the two lines are parallel. Find its matching alternate angle.
71°, because alternate interior angles on parallel lines are equal.
A triangle has angles 38° and 84°. Find the third and name the fact used.
180°−38°−84°=58°, using the triangle angle sum.
