When your child is practising but not improving

Pick three questions from a recent attempt: one correct, one partly correct and one they could not start. Ask your child to explain the first decision in each without looking at the solution.

Distinguish a missing idea from trouble selecting a method, carrying out a calculation or finishing within time. More timed papers may not address a concept the student cannot yet explain. Conversely, repeating an easy procedure may not help a student choose between methods.

• Missing concept: ask the teacher for an explanation and a small set of linked examples.
• Method selection: mix a few question types and explain why each method fits.
• Execution: check a short worked solution line by line, then retry independently.
• Timing: practise a bounded section once the underlying methods are reliable.

Responding to a disappointing prelim result

Begin with “Let’s look at what this tells us” rather than a prediction about the final grade. Do not convert a school prelim score directly into an admission forecast.

Ask the teacher which gaps deserve attention first. Agree on a small review plan, keep the paper as a reference and revisit a similar question after a few days without the answer beside it. If the same obstacle persists, change the support rather than simply adding hours.

Catch Up. Move Up. Get Ahead.

Catch Up can mean rebuilding a prerequisite before the next topic. Move Up can mean solving mixed questions independently. Get Ahead can mean tackling an unfamiliar application once the foundations are secure.

These are next-step choices, not permanent labels for a student. Mentora helps determine the useful next step from where the learner currently is. Discuss the reasoning behind a task, not only the number of questions completed.

A weekly conversation you can keep short

Ask what became easier, what still needed help and what the next session will focus on. Write down one observable goal, such as explaining why a factorisation works without copying a worked answer.

Protect a realistic stopping time. When planning for life after O-Levels, keep one separate slot for comparing pathways so that every revision conversation does not become an admissions conversation.
