Which learning route fits your child’s interests, readiness and practical needs?

Start with the kind of learning your child wants to do, then check eligibility for the correct intake. A route name or a historical score cannot make that decision for your family.

The main routes to compare

MOE’s JAE overview lists two-year JC programmes (A-Level or IB), the three-year A-Level route at Millennia Institute, three-year polytechnic diplomas and two-year Higher Nitec courses at ITE. Check the exact programme and admissions exercise rather than treating all post-secondary options as interchangeable.

Build a shortlist in three passes

First, name two or three areas your child would like to explore. Translate broad interests into actual subjects or course modules: enjoying technology, for example, could mean programming, design or working with hardware.

Second, read the entry requirements and record any subject-specific questions. Third, compare travel, fees, equipment needs, support and the demands of an ordinary week. Keep an option only if your child can explain what they would be learning there.

How to prepare for JAE

Use the official instructions for the application year to confirm eligibility, access arrangements, course choices and deadlines. Check every course code and retain the application acknowledgement.

Discuss choice order with your child before submitting. If a previous offer or a different qualification may affect eligibility, ask MOE or the institution directly. Do not assume a family member’s earlier application rules still apply.

If the preferred option is out of reach

Revisit the underlying interest. A student drawn to computing might compare an applied diploma with a subject-based route, but should inspect the work involved in both.

Ask an Education and Career Guidance counsellor to help identify alternatives and their conditions. Check the official posting or appeal instructions before taking action. Avoid paying for another programme on the assumption that an appeal will succeed.

Admission year is the year of entry, not the year of the examination. These notes were verified on 2026-09-09.

2028 onward · SEC cohort

MOE has announced PSE from 2028, following the first SEC examination in 2027. Use the rules for your admission year; do not carry older JAE calculations forward.
