Before exams: make the next week useful
Ask your child to bring one recent piece of work to a short conversation. Let them explain what felt secure, what needed help and where they ran out of time. Choose one change you can both recognise a week later.
- If practice is not translating into results, look at the first step they cannot complete independently.
- If foundations are secure, choose mixed questions that require deciding which method to use.
- If familiar work is comfortable, agree on a stretch task and protect time to reflect on it.

After results: separate feelings from decisions
Give your child room to react before turning a result into a list of schools. Then write down interests, non-negotiable practical needs and questions that need official answers.
A useful shortlist explains why each option belongs on it. “My friends are going” is worth hearing, but it should not be the only reason. Compare a normal study week, travel time and the subjects or modules your child wants to learn.

Keep the student in the conversation
Try: “Which option would you like to understand better?” Ask them to bring back one course module or subject combination that interests them and one concern. Add your questions about costs, travel and support.
Agree on a next action rather than demanding a final career choice. A conversation with a teacher, an open-house question or a close reading of two course pages can move the decision forward.
